SLOW DOWN on London Road

16 Oct 2009

Brentwood West Liberal Democrats have launched a targeted campaign to try to slow down the traffic in London Road following the death of a resident's cat on Sunday night at the wheel of a speeding driver.

Cllr Karen Chilvers said:

"The traffic in this road just travels too fast and I'm not sure everyone is aware that it is a 30mph zone. The sad end of Minnie the cat, as reported in last week's papers, brings home the danger that is presented here - a cat today, but maybe a child or an elderly resident tomorrow."

The Liberal Democrat team has:

  • Issued a poster to all residents for display, enforcing the speed limit and made posters available to download from their website.
  • Spoken to Essex Police and succeeded in getting them to do spot checks on the speed of the traffic already.
  • Campaigned for VAS (Vehicle Activated Signs) on London Road, which are now in place outside South Weald Parish Hall.

Brentwood West Campaigner Nigel Clarke said:

"Many school children and elderly people have to cross this busy road on a daily basis so it is vital we do all we can to get the speeds down. As a father of daughters aged 12 & 17 and I would be extremely concerned about them crossing this road. I would urge residents to display the posters and try to help get the message across."

They are now asking for an additional VAS sign in the Kavanaghs Roads area and requested this is on the next Highways agenda.
