Liberal Democrat leader, Councillor Barry Aspinell, explains to residents why he supports the Care Leavers Pledge, supporting young people as they transition from local authority care into independent adulthood.

“As a Council, we supported the Pledge, agreed in March, which outlined practical steps to eliminate barriers, foster independence, and ensure that care leavers aged 16-25 feel supported, valued, and connected to their community,” he says.

Both Borough and County Councils will work together to provide a single point of contact to help care leavers navigate services and processes effectively. Care leavers will also receive priority access to safe, secure and affordable housing, including priority consideration for council housing where they have a local connection.

Whether it is assisting care leavers seeking jobs in local government, supporting their health and wellbeing, or providing financial assistance with Council Tax and parking, local government should be here to help.

The Pledge is backed by ex-Olympian and Brentwood resident Fatima Whitbread, a long-standing advocate for young people leaving care, whose support has helped spotlight the unique challenges they face and the importance of community-led support.

Councillor Aspinell said: "Every young person leaving care deserves the same opportunities, stability and respect as any other member of our community. This pledge demonstrates our commitment to standing alongside care leavers, breaking down barriers, and helping create the foundations for a confident and independent future.

He added: “I am proud that Brentwood has taken this practical step, ensuring our care leavers feel supported and valued as they move into adulthood."
