Brentwood Liberal Democrats support decision for five unitary authorities in Essex
Brentwood Liberal Democrats have responded to the Government’s Local Government Reorganisation decision backing a proposal for five unitary councils, which will see Brentwood become part of a new authority with Chelmsford City Council and Maldon District Council.
The debate on Local Government Reorganisation follows the Government’s Devolution White Paper, in which they set out to replace the current ‘two-tier’ system of local government with ‘single-tier’ unitary authorities.
The Government invited authorities to develop plans for how all-purpose unitary councils could provide essential public services more efficiently across the county.
Councillor Barry Aspinell, Leader of Brentwood Borough Council said:
“This decision supports the five unitary model put forward by the majority of councils in Essex, which we believe offered the best solution for the county.”
“We collaborated with councils across Essex to find the best way forward for local government.
“Throughout this process, my primary focus has always been clear: to ensure Brentwood residents continue to receive the quality services they expect, from a council that listens and remains closely connected to the community, and to whom they are accountable.
That’s why I believe the five unitary model is the best option for us.
This option means stronger local voices, better connections with our towns and villages, and services that are both reliable and financially sustainable.”
He added that for many residents including himself, today was also a sad day.
Councillor Aspinell added: “I am personally sorry to see Brentwood Borough Council lose its unique identity.
“Despite some reservations, I will use my 45 years in local government, to implement a local government structure for Brentwood that delivers better outcomes for residents.
He offered this pledge to residents: “We will ensure your local voices are heard and reflected in the merger process, and ensure our community governance preserves the Brentwood way of life in our towns and parishes.”
He concluded “I hope this decision gives Brentwood the best chance to safeguard what matters most to our community.”
Councillor David Worsfold, the Deputy Leader of the Council, said: "I welcome the news that Brentwood Borough Council will be merging with Chelmsford City Council and Maldon District Council.”
He added: “Shenfield has strong transport links to our County town, as does Ingatestone, while my residents travel to the city for work, business, leisure and shopping.”
He concluded: “I will ensure that my Shenfield residents are strongly represented in the negotiations to follow, and that the distinctive character and community of Shenfield is retained and enhanced.”
