A Christmas Message from the Mayor of Brentwood
As we approach this festive season and reflect on the year so far, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible experiences and warm welcomes I’ve received across our Borough. Serving as your Mayor has been an honour and a privilege, and I am proud of the strong sense of community that makes Brentwood such a special place.
Since my appointment, and with the support of the Mayoress, Vanessa Laplain we’ve had the pleasure of attending schools, religious services, care homes, charity fundraisers and local events, including Lighting Up Brentwood celebration. Switching on the Christmas lights alongside Sophie and George, winners of the Mayor’s Christmas poem and card competition, was a truly joyful moment that captured the spirit of the season.
This year has been filled with memorable moments, from visiting our twinned towns, Montbazon and Roth, and strengthening those valued international friendships, to leading the Brentwood Remembrance Day Parade. The parade was particularly a humbling experience as hundreds came together to honour those who gave their lives for our country. Guiding nearly 600 participants – including veterans, cadets and community groups - to the War Memorial is a moment I will cherish forever.
I am also proud to have hosted charity events supporting my chosen causes: Wilderness Foundation UK, which promotes mental well-being and environmental education, and Recoil Trampoline Centre, which provides inclusive opportunities for people of all abilities. Your generosity has already made a difference, and I look forward to continuing these efforts in the New Year.
We would also like to recognise the hard work of organisations and individuals who have gone above and beyond to help others and make Brentwood a better place. The Civic Awards provide an opportunity to honour those who have shown exceptional commitment, bravery or service to our community. If you know someone deserving of this recognition, please nominate them for Citizen of the Year at www.brentwood.gov.uk/CivicAwardsNomination
Looking ahead, I look forward to meeting more amazing people and organisations in the coming months. If you have a community group or event, please feel free to invite me, I will do my best to attend! You can reach out by emailing mayors.secretary@brentwood.gov.uk
As we move into 2026, let’s carry forward the spirit of hope, kindness and optimism. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and peaceful New Year.
Councillor Jay Laplain
